The Alpha State
The Alpha State of Awareness is a state of deep relaxation and is viewed as a gateway to deep meditation.
This state induces the relaxation of the nervous system, lowers the blood pressure and the heart rate, slows down the metabolism and releases endorphins.
Endorphins are neurotransmitters that are produced by the body. They can induce pain relief or feelings of pleasure and bliss.
Allowing yourself to enter this state by meditating, listening to music or even daydreaming can release endorphins.
This state of awareness is sometimes viewed as a means of connecting with the Creative Source, a state of inspiration where you can conceive ideas, plans, solutions, art, fiction and philosophical concepts.
One method of entering this state is to watch and listen to your breathing for a ten to twenty minute period. This slows down the activity of the brain allowing your mind and body to enter into a more relaxed state.
Another method is listening to certain types of sounds such as ocean waves or music which contains gentle pulsing beats.
Going into the Alpha State can be rejuvenating and restorative. As well as enhancing your intuition and stimulating your imagination, it helps you to focus your mind, body and spirit.
The five categories of brainwave activity are beta, alpha, theta, gamma and delta. Read about their connection to stress, meditation and relaxation:
