GROUNDING TECHNIQUES

Grounding yourself is essential when you finish a meditation session.

Grounding techniques range from simply wriggling your toes and fingers at the end of a session to writing a detailed account of what occurred during your meditation period.

It is important to bring yourself back to your physical environment and not remain in a floating heady state as you go about your daily activities.

Also it is very helpful to bring any insights, images or discoveries that arise during your meditation sessions into your everyday awareness so that you can make positive changes in your life.

Here are three different ways to ground yourself after a meditation session.

1) ENGAGE WITH YOUR PHYSICAL BODY BY DOING ONE OR MORE OF THE FOLLOWING:

• Wriggling your fingers and toes

• Shrugging the shoulders

• Shaking your head

• Marching on the spot

• Stamping your feet

• Clapping your hands three times

• Drinking some water

2) WRITE

Note down any sensations, feelings, images or insights that occurred while you were meditating.

When reading your records days or weeks later, new connections, discoveries and realisations may occur to you that didn’t arise at the time of the original experience.

3) DRAW

Sketch a simple (or detailed) drawing of an image that you received during meditation or a symbol that captures what you felt during the experience.
