WHAT IS MEDITATION?
Meditation can be viewed as a spiritual practice, a system of personal development or a tool for improving your health. The usual ideas associated with meditation are chanting, yoga posture, deep breathing or emptying the mind or thinking about 'nothing'. But there are a huge diversity of methods, techniques and systems which can be defined as 'meditation'. The verb 'to meditate' comes from the Latin verb meditari which means to think over or consider and the noun meditatio which means contemplation.
Meditation is practised in different ways by people of diverse backgrounds and with different aims in mind.
The monk in religious contemplation, the yoga teacher, the martial arts expert, the stressed executive or the hospital patient may all practise meditation. But each may have a distinct method of meditation with a different aim in mind. At its simplest, meditation can be described as the focus of the mind on one thing. This focus could be a mantra, an image, silence, a line of poetry, a word, a thought or a work of art.
