Music for Meditation

Listening to music for meditation may sometimes transport you into a meditative state without you having to do any preliminary meditation exercises. Of course, it depends on how relaxed you may already be.

Music designed for meditation can lift your spirits, inspire your mind and refresh and relax your body.

One simple meditation technique is to close your eyes as you listen to a piece of music and watch the images that appear in your mind's eye.

Note the colours, movements, patterns, and figures that appear on your inner visual screen.

Does the music evoke memories or associations?

Does it awake your senses, evoke smells and sounds?

Do you feel any sensations?

You can combine this listening exercise with a writing meditation technique.

After listening to a piece of music for ten or fifteen minutes -of any genre (classical, spiritual, New Age, World music) - you may wish to write about the images that entered your mind while you listened to the piece.

These images and ideas can be used a springboard for further creativity such as ideas for short stories. Or you can keep a Music Meditation Diary to record and interpret these images connecting them with issues in your current life or past.

If you are artistically inclined, you may prefer to draw, sketch or create paintings of the images you see in your music meditation sessions.
