REIKI

Reiki is a valuable way to enhance your meditation practice.

It can be described as a method of relaxation, a holistic healing practice or a “massage" for the soul.

The word 'Reiki' is usually translated in English as Universal Life Energy.

It is best known as a gentle and relaxing complementary therapy that is holistic in nature and which can work alongside orthodox healthcare. A treatment can contribute to:

• emotional and spiritual healing

• pain relief and control

• stress reduction

• a deep feeling of relaxation and sense of well-being

However Reiki was originally developed as a tool for self-healing, personal development and spiritual growth.

One of the best ways to use Reiki is through meditation.

The Roots of Reiki

Reiki was developed by Mikao Usui in Japan in the early 1900s.

His system was influenced by a combination of ancient traditions such as Japanese palm healing, Buddhism and the energy cultivation techniques used in systems similar to chi kung or tai chi.

Although it does have a spiritual aspect, Western Reiki is not affiliated with any religious belief or thought system.

Since Reiki has been introduced to the West, many new energy systems based on the original Japanese form of Reiki have been developed.

Reiki Treatments

During a treatment, the practitioner channels a form of energy, (the same energy that is cultivated during yoga exercise or acupuncture treatments), placing her hands on, or a few inches away from, different areas of the client’s body such as the head, the torso and the legs.

Reiki boosts the natural self-healing processes of the body, aids relaxation and harmonises your energies on emotional, mental and spiritual levels.

It is also a non-invasive therapy. During treatments, the client remains fully clothed (although shoes and spectacles must be removed) lying down with their eyes closed.

Alternatively treatments can be received in the seated position.

Everyone's experiences of the Reiki vibrations are different.

People may feel sensations such as heat, floating or tingling. Some fall asleep. Occasionally a few people experience nothing at all. Most people feel a deeply relaxed sense of well-being.

Reiki and Meditation

There are several ways in which you can combine Reiki and meditation:

• When receiving a treatment from a Reiki practitioner, you can use your imagination to visualise the energy entering your body, your chakras, your aura and your energy channels

• If you are already attuned to Reiki, you can practise self-healing meditations while channelling Reiki

• You can listen to a guided meditation recording which sends Reiki energy to the listener.
