The Subconscious

The subconscious - often called the lower unconscious - is the part of our mind that contains our psychological past, buried memories, instincts, obsessions and phobias.

It is the home of our repressed urges, compulsive behaviours and unconscious habits.

One way to change negative behaviour patterns or mental habits is by "programming" your lower unconscious.

The lower unconscious is very receptive to positive imagery, affirmations and mantras. This is because images and repetitive ideas bypass the normal conscious thinking processes and directly influence and impact the lower unconscious.

Visual images or ideas influence our thoughts. Our thoughts affect our emotions and create our actions and circumstances. So nourishing our unconscious with positive imagery, mantras and affirmations can have a beneficial impact on our mindset, attitude and lifestyle.

However constant repetition of these images and ideas is important to uproot deeply negative associations and ideas from our minds.

Meditating with mantras is one way of feeding the lower unconscious. (Click here for an example of a Mantra Meditation).

You could also invent your own mantras and positive slogans and write them down on Post-It notes or coloured signs, if you enjoy artwork.

You could create a mental, virtual or actual noticeboard containing encouraging and constructive messages for your subconscious using symbols or pictures focused on the positive themes you want to bring into your life.

This method uses a technique called SoulCollage.

In this Self Study Meditation Course, you work with the Shadow Self which represents the lower unconscious.
